Even There

God sees all.

I know that. I have prayed that for years. But this morning another thought came to me that I don’t think I have ever really considered.

Even hell is not outside of God’s sight.

The Psalm says, “If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I sink to the netherworld, you are present there.”

And sometimes there is what feels like hell right here on earth.

We see terrible things happen, especially to children, and I can’t understand it. I don’t know why God permits some of the things He permits.

Then today, on the Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels, Jesus talks about the angels of the little ones, who “always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.”

Then today, on the Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels, Jesus talks about the angels of the little ones, who “always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.”

And part of me wants to yell, “Where were You, Lord? Where was their guardian angel?”

I don’t know.

Maybe that is why Job belongs here today. God asks Job, “Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth?”

No. And neither have I.

There are things God permits that I cannot begin to understand. That doesn’t mean He approves of the evil. It doesn’t mean He caused it. And it doesn’t mean He wasn’t there.

I just can’t comprehend the breadth of God.

So where does that leave me?

Trust. Faith. Hope.

Those are the three words I wrote this morning. Not because I suddenly understand why terrible things happen. I don’t. But I believe God is still God in the darkest place. He sees what I cannot see. He understands what I cannot understand. And evil doesn’t get the last word.

So my prayer today is that I can trust God even when I don’t understand. That I can have faith when I want answers, hope when things seem terribly dark, and remember that even there… God is present.

Where do you need to trust that God is present, even though you don’t understand?

I pray you get the graces you need today.

Keep up the good fight.

I’m praying for you. Please pray for me.
