Be Not Afraid

I don’t like the thought of people thinking less of me. There, I said it. I consider myself an eternal optimist. I like people getting along, finding common ground, and being comfortable around one another. And if I’m being honest, I sometimes worry too much about what others think of me.

Maybe that’s why Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel made me a little uneasy.

“Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” (Luke 12:51)

I don’t believe Jesus wants us going around creating division. But He knows there are two ways to live, the way of the world and His way. And choosing His way isn’t always going to make everyone happy.

That got me thinking about my own life. Am I willing to let people see my faith?

Now, some of you reading this might be wondering what I’m talking about. After all, I’m sharing my faith with you right now! But that’s easy for me because I know you’re a willing audience. It’s a little different when I’m around people who may not share my beliefs.

Something as simple as saying grace before a meal when I’m with others. Sometimes I hesitate. Partly because I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable, but probably more because I worry about what they might think of me.

Over the last few days, I’ve been reflecting on habits, how we form them and how difficult they can be to break. Maybe this is one small habit I need to work on. Simply saying grace before a meal, regardless of who’s sitting around the table. Not to make a statement or draw attention to myself, but simply to thank God for His blessings.

And I think that’s where today’s other readings come in.

St. Paul prays that we may be strengthened through the Holy Spirit in our inner selves. And the Psalm reminds us that the eyes of the Lord are upon those who hope in His kindness.

Maybe that’s exactly the strength and hope I need. Not to argue with people or convince them I’m right, but simply to be comfortable letting others see that I belong to Christ.

Today is also the feast of Pope St. John Paul II. I asked him to pray for me this morning, in part because of his famous words, “Be not afraid.”

How fitting!

So my prayer today is simple. Lord, strengthen me through Your Spirit. Help me stop worrying so much about what others think of me. Give me the courage to live my faith openly, always with charity, and never be afraid to let others see my love for You.

Are you sometimes hiding your love for Christ because you are afraid of what others might think?

I pray you get the graces you need today.

Keep up the good fight.

I’m praying for you. Please pray for me.

Pope St. John Paul II, please pray for us.
