Seeking God in Every Moment

“Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.” (Psalm 24:6)

For some reason, the word seek kept coming back to me this morning. Not just knowing God, believing in God, or praying to God, but actually seeking Him.

In the first reading, St. Paul tells us to live in a manner worthy of the calling we have received. He speaks of humility, gentleness, patience, and love, and then reminds us that we are called to be one body and one Spirit.

That got me thinking. The Holy Spirit isn’t the one who needs to change. I am! If I want to be one with the Spirit, I need to seek Him and allow Him to guide my actions.

And not just during morning prayer or at Mass. I need to seek Him throughout my day. When I’m frustrated, seek Him. When I’m tempted to judge someone, seek Him. When I’m uncomfortable, seek Him. Even when things are going great, seek Him!

That’s where today’s Gospel comes in. Jesus challenges the people because they can interpret the weather but cannot recognize what is happening right in front of them.

I wonder how often I do the same thing.

I can get so wrapped up in planning for tomorrow that I overlook what God is asking of me in the moment.

And sometimes, I know exactly what I should do, but I just don’t want to do it. Especially when it involves something uncomfortable. If I can avoid discomfort, I generally choose to do so.

That’s selfishness. Plain and simple. And in that moment, I’m not seeking God. I’m seeking what I want.

And that’s exactly why I need to keep seeking God. Because left to myself, I’ll often choose what’s easiest for me rather than what love is asking of me.

That brings me back to Psalm 24. Who can ascend the mountain of the Lord? Those with clean hands and pure hearts. Those who SEEK His face.

Maybe the more I seek the Holy Spirit in my everyday actions, the more I’ll cooperate with His grace. And maybe, little by little, my actions will begin to match what I say I believe. I’ll become a little less of a hypocrite and a little more like the person God is calling me to be.

So my prayer today is simple. Lord, help me seek You in everything I do. Not just when it’s convenient, but especially when it’s uncomfortable. Help me put aside my selfishness and choose love.

Are you seeking God in the uncomfortable moments, or are you simply choosing what’s easiest for yourself?

I pray you get the graces you need today.

Keep up the good fight.

I’m praying for you. Please pray for me.
