St. Paul says, “Who knows what pertains to a person except his spirit that is within?” Then in the Gospel, there is a man sitting in the synagogue with an unclean spirit. He may have been sitting there week after week, and nobody around him really knew what was going on inside him.

But Jesus did.

The truth is, I really don’t know what is going on inside another man. I can see his actions and hear his words, but I don’t know his heart. Jesus does.

So it was a good reminder that my job isn’t to figure everybody out. My job is to lead with charity, give the other guy some grace, and ask Jesus to help me discern what I actually need to discern.

Today I pray that I can be a little more like St. Teresa of Calcutta. Just love the person God puts in front of me and let Jesus handle what I can’t see.
